Your welcome Kapil! Thank you for your questions and participation.
do u need 2 know music theory to b a better guitarist
Hey Tom,
Thanks for the question. The answer is definitely no! Music theory can help you understand more about what your doing and things that you can do to open up new ideas, but it’s certainly not necessary to know. You would be shocked at how many “great guitarists” there are that know nothing about music theory. Now with that said…
I do think it depends on how good your ear is. I’ve worked with students who have amazing “ears” and know how to get either the sounds in their head, or what they hear on recordings, to come through their fingers and onto the fretboard. For these types of people, Theory usually just ends up confusing them.
If you think that you don’t have as good of an ear for music (I was and am that type of individual), then understanding theory can help explain and open more things up to you. But theory can go pretty deep and can be applied in many different situations.
Let me know more about what you are working on or struggling with and I can recommend some theory concepts to focus on
Mike D
P.S. Because I never had a great “ear” I really took to learning theory because I found it fascinating. Not everyone is like that though but it does help me to relate to both sides of the spectrum when it comes to working with students and helping them achieve what they want out of their playing
