Here Is What We Suggest To Check Out First, Based On Your Current Skill Level & Learning Preferences

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='378' comment='RGP-Survey-SkillLevel-Beginner']Your Skill Level: Beginner

Awesome! While it may seem overwhelming as to where to start and to learn what you want to play as fast as possible… The best part about being a total beginner is that you don't have any bad playing or practicing habits.

We are going to make sure that you get started RIGHT by focusing on the core essentials to playing guitar which include:

  • Learning To Tune
  • Basic Playing Technique
  • How To Play Open Chords and Power Chords
  • The Minor Pentatonic Scale
  • And Playing A 12 Bar Blues Progression

We cover all these principles and more in our Volume 1 program.

Get started with those lessons and see how they fit your needs. If they are too easy, then jump to the Volume 2 program which will cover more intermediate skills and concepts[/accessally_has_any_tag]

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='379' comment='RGP-Survey-SkillLevel-Intermediate']Your Skill Level: Intermediate

As an intermediate player you should have many of the basic open chords, bar chords, and scales down. At this skill level you should start getting comfortable playing some of your favorite songs but also be open to challenging yourself to improve on the skills you already have.

Too often people want to jump into learning things that are too difficult for them before mastering the basic skills so be sure to keep improving on the skills you already possess.

One of the most important skills and habits to develop at this stage is ALWAYS practicing with a Metronome or Backing Track. Having a solid understanding of rhythm and being able to practice at slow tempos will allow you to perfect what your learning. Once things are mastered at slow tempos, speeding them up is far easier than trying to play them at full speed right away.

Be sure to check out our lesson on How To Use A Metronome

You can also check out our library of Backing Tracks to make practicing a lot more fun and exciting.

Finally... Be sure to check out the lessons in the Soloing & Lead Playing Course.

This course will teach you how to use the whole guitar neck when soloing and improvising.

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='380' comment='RGP-Survey-SkillLevel-Advanced']Your Skill Level: Advanced

As an advanced player you should always be looking to push yourself to learn new techniques and styles while always looking to improve on your current abilities. Many players at this level like to focus a lot on Soloing/Lead Playing, Jamming and Improvising.

This is one of our favorite aspects to teach at Rock Guitar Power and we have a couple REALLY fun and unique programs for you to check out! The first is called "The Guitar Pro Jam".

Each lesson in this program focuses on an original Jam or Groove. We first teach you how to play the Jam and then teach you a handful of Licks that go great with the Jam. We provide backing tracks in different tempos so you can work your way up to playing full speed.

We start you out with 3 different Lessons and as a Monthly All Access Member, you will get access to a new Lesson every month.

The second program to check out is called "Jammin With The Band".

Jammin With The Band will give you a totally unique online experience where you get to actually Jam and play along with a real Rock/Blues band that we brought into our studio and recorded!

You first watch the band perform a song. Then we teach you how to play the song on guitar and then we put together a video where the real guitar player is muted so it's your turn to fill his role and jam along with the band!

Core Skills & Techniques...

Open Chords

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='381' comment='RGP-Survey-OpenChords-NeedHelp']

Open chords are one of the most foundational types of chords to learn as they are used in SO many songs. They are called open chords because they involve playing open strings (no fingers on them) as well as fretted notes and they usually take place within the first 3 frets of the guitar.

We have a great resource to help you learn and play Open Chords.

It comes from our Volume 1 program which will cover the basic technique of playing them.

You will also find video lessons which will walk you through playing each chord individually! [/accessally_has_any_tag][accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='382' comment='RGP-Survey-OpenChords-AllSet']

Bar Chords

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='383' comment='RGP-Survey-BarChords-NeedHelp']

Learning to play Bar Chords is an HUGE step as a guitar player because it introduces one of the most powerful concepts that makes guitar A LOT easier to learn than most people think… That concept is movable chord shapes and movable patterns.

The guitar is a VERY pattern oriented instrument, which means if you learn to play something in one position, all you have to do is move the same shape or pattern somewhere else to keep things moving. This applies to both chords and scales... and Bar Chords are Movable!

So once you learn the 4 basic shapes… You'll be able to play the chords to just about any song you want. No Joke!

So let's get you started on a lesson, from our Volume 2 course, which explains how to play the 4 basic shapes I'm talking about.

Here's our lesson on learning to play Power Chords.

Another critical component to playing Bar Chords is knowing How To Find Notes On The Big E and A Strings. Review our lesson on this from Volume 1

Here's a lesson to review Major & Minor Bar Chords

It's also a good idea to make sure you are comfortable knowing the notes up and down the E and A string. This is where we root most of the bar chords. Click Here For A Lesson On The Fretboard

The Minor Pentatonic Scale

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='385' comment='RGP-Survey-MinorPentScale-NeedHelp']

Ok… This one is going to be fun!

The minor pentatonic scale is without a doubt the absolute KING of guitar scales. Not only is it very simple, but it's extremely powerful and used in literally every guitar solo you've ever heard. It's also movable so let's check out a lesson from Volume 1 to learn The Minor Pentatonic Scale, as well as The Blues scale!

Right after getting that scale down… Let's put it to good use and teach you a fun Guitar Lick that you can use to jam with.[/accessally_has_any_tag][accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='386' comment='RGP-Survey-MinorPentScale-AllSet']

Sweet... Looks like you got this down!

Be sure to check out our Soloing & Lead Playing Course. This will help you understand how you can use the 5 different pentatonic patterns to be able to use more of the guitar neck when soloing and improvising.

Naming The Notes On The E & A String

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='387' comment='RGP-Survey-NotesOnEAString-NeedHelp']

One of the things that overwhelms people about learning guitar is that they think they need to know and understand every note on the entire fretboard to learn to play well. While this is certainly helpful to know, it's totally not necessary!

The reason is because of a concept we talked about earlier which has to do with movable shapes.

Most of the chords and scale patterns we use to play the majority of the music we want to learn are rooted on either the Big E and A strings. A huge secret, that goes along with our movable shapes, is that once you know where the root of the chord or scale is, you don't need to know much else to be able to play it well.

So let's review a lesson from Volume 1 called "Understanding The Notes On The Fretboard".[/accessally_has_any_tag][accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='388' comment='RGP-Survey-NotesOnEAString-AllSet']

Understanding Key Signatures

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='389' comment='RGP-Survey-KeySignatures-NeedHelp']

Now we are getting into some really fundamental theory concepts that will help you not only as a guitar player, but as a musician as well.

Key Signatures are what rule the worlds of both songwriting and soloing. EVERY song or jam is in a specific key signature and if you want to master the ability to play it or solo over it, you NEED to understand what key it's in.

To help break this theory concept down and make it not only easy, but fun to understand, then dive into these lessons from Volume 2:

Jamming & Improvising

[accessally_has_any_tag tag_id='391' comment='RGP-Survey-JamImprovise-NeedHelp']

If there is one aspect of playing guitar where you can experience endless hours of fun, challenging and exciting ways to get totally immersed in music… It's learning to Jam, Improvise and Solo.

One of the most fun aspects to learning these skills is that it gives you the freedom to be creative and create your "own voice" as a guitar player. And… Let's face it… Everyone loves hearing a guitar player that can rip it up when it comes time to throw down a guitar solo.

Rock Guitar Power has A LOT of lessons to improve your skills as a soloist so here's our recommendations to check out first:

If your new to soloing or just want to brush up on the basics… check out the "Soloing & Lead Playing Program". This course will teach you all the popular pentatonic patterns and how to move them around so you can open up the Whole guitar neck

Check out our course called "The Modes On Guitar" to learn how to use Major and Minor scales all across the guitar neck to improvise with.

If your looking to have the experience of what it's like to play in a real band, Then check out "Jammin With The Band". We guarantee this will be a totally unique and awesome experience.

Last but certainly not least... actually it's our favorite program of them all! Check out "The Guitar Pro Jam".

This course will give you a new and original "Jam" to learn every month where we teach you how to play the chords or groove, the specific licks and solo lines to play over it and give you backing tracks at different tempos and mixes to make practicing super fun and easy.

The goal of The Guitar Pro Jam is to make you confident on how to jam and improvise with other musicians on the spot!

And also be sure to check out our Guitar Backing Tracks so that you can practice your soloing to many different grooves, key signatures and tempos!
